ABOUT PARTNERSHIPS
Partnerships with organizations that directly address environmental
and community issues are essential to SOLAR YOUTH programs.
Through partnerships, youth learn directly from environmental professionals
and leaders in their community, and are exposed to careers in natural
resources, community service and education. Through collaboration
on Community Service Action Projects and Public Education Forums,
youth assist Partners in addressing their organizational concerns,
and work to educate the wider community about the issues.
SOLAR YOUTH fills a niche between youth
service agencies and local environmental organizations.
Youth service agencies, including schools, have a need for programs
that engage youth in safe and educational activities.
Environmental organizations have a need for outreach into local
communities.
SOLAR YOUTH brings the two together.
Youth service agencies act as hosts to our programs, providing
facilities, a pool of participants, and occasionally funding. Environmental
partners provide curriculum resources, technical assistance and
mentorship for education and community service action projects.
Our partnerships build bridges between urban communities and natural
resource professionals - each teaching and learning from the other,
and together addressing concerns of communities traditionally absent
from environmental dialogues, i.e. low-income communities-of-color.
In addition, youth are exposed to a wide range of careers related
to the environment - professions in need of diversification. Finally,
our program partners provide opportunities for a diversity of experiences,
adventures, and technical assistance.
